Refresh Worn Concrete with Ardex Overlay Systems

Tired concrete doesn't always need demolition. Ardex overlay technology bonds a new wearing surface directly to sound slabs, giving you a fresh finish in days instead of weeks. Regina Concrete applies Ardex overlays for decorative microtoppings, structural resurfacing, and stamped finishes across residential and commercial projects.

When overlay makes sense

Ardex Overlays for Concrete Resurfacing

A concrete slab that is structurally intact but visually worn, stained, or out of spec is a candidate for overlay. Rather than excavate and replace, an Ardex overlay system bonds a new surface layer to the existing concrete, restoring appearance and performance without the cost and disruption of full removal.

Ardex manufactures overlay systems for every scenario: thin decorative microtoppings for showrooms and entries, polishable overlays for retail floors, stamped overlays for patios and hardscape, and structural overlays for heavy-use warehouse and industrial floors. Each system is engineered for its application.

Our role is to assess the existing slab, select the right Ardex product, and install it to Ardex specification. The warranty is only valid when the system is installed per Ardex protocol. We also coordinate with Ardex self-leveling underlayment if flatness correction is needed, and with Ardex repair systems for spalls or cracks that must be addressed before overlay. For slabs that are structurally compromised, we recommend foundation replacement or full concrete floor replacement.

Installation sequence

How Ardex Overlay Installation Works

  1. Slab evaluation

We inspect the existing concrete for structural integrity, moisture levels, surface contamination, and any cracks or spalls. This assessment determines which Ardex overlay system is appropriate and what prep work is required.

  2. Surface preparation

The slab is diamond-ground to the Ardex profile, cleaned of all contaminants, and any cracks or damaged areas are repaired with compatible Ardex mortar. The prepared surface is then primed with the Ardex primer specified for the chosen overlay system.

  3. Overlay placement

The Ardex overlay material is mixed to exact manufacturer ratios, poured at the engineered thickness, and finished to the specified look. This may be a smooth troweled finish, a stamped pattern, or a polished surface depending on the system selected.

  4. Cure and protection

The overlay cures according to Ardex schedule, receives the topcoat or sealer specified by the system, and is handed off with warranty documentation and care instructions. The slab is ready for service once cure is complete.

Why installer matters

Ardex Warranty Depends on Spec Compliance

Ardex systems are engineered products. The warranty is only valid when the installer follows Ardex specification for prep, primer, mix ratios, placement, and cure time. Cutting corners on any step voids the warranty and risks premature failure. We install to spec because that is what makes the system work.

If your slab needs flatness correction before overlay, we use Ardex self-leveling underlayment to bring it into tolerance. If there are spalls or cracks, we repair them with Ardex repair mortars before overlay. This sequencing ensures the overlay bonds to a sound, properly prepared base.

Common questions

Ardex Overlay Questions, Answered

Overlay systems, thickness ranges, warranty and when overlay beats replacement.

When the underlying slab is structurally sound and the surface issues are cosmetic or wear-related. Overlay restores the look and performance at a fraction of replacement cost; structural failure of the slab itself requires replacement.
Ranges widely by system, from very thin decorative microtoppings to substantial structural overlays. The overlay thickness matches the existing-slab condition and the use the resurfaced floor will see.
Yes, Ardex offers polishable and stamped overlay systems. The look is part of the system spec; we agree the look up front and use the matched Ardex product for that finish.
Yes. Ardex warranty applies when installers follow Ardex spec on prep, mix, install and cure. We install to spec and deliver the warranty documentation at handoff.
A few days to a week for most residential or small-commercial projects, with cure before service. Larger or staged projects take longer; the full schedule is in the quote.
