Soil Pressure Demands Engineered Retaining Walls in Regina

Gravity and water work against every retaining wall, so the footing, rebar and drainage system have to be sized for the actual load. Regina Concrete builds poured and block walls that stay put through freeze-thaw cycles, and fixes walls that have started to lean or crack. Free written estimate on every project.

Load-bearing structure

How Retaining Walls Resist Soil and Water

A retaining wall is not a fence or a decorative feature. It is a load-bearing structure that must resist the weight and pressure of soil, water and whatever sits on top of the grade. The visible concrete is only half the story.

Below grade, the footing must be sized to the height and the soil type. Rebar runs through the wall to tie it together. Behind the wall, a drainage layer and weeping tile carry water away so hydrostatic pressure never builds up and pushes the slab forward.

We build poured concrete walls as a single monolithic pour on an engineered footing, or block walls that are cored and reinforced to the same standard. When an existing wall is moving, wall repair starts by fixing the drainage or footing problem that caused the failure. Retaining walls often tie into patio grading and walkway systems across the lot.

Construction sequence

Building a Concrete Retaining Wall Step by Step

  1. Site measurement and design

We measure the height, slope, soil type and what load sits above the wall, then size the footing and reinforcement to match the actual conditions.

  2. Excavate and set footing

The footing trench is dug below frost line and a concrete base is poured to the engineered dimensions. This is where the wall's stability begins.

  3. Form, reinforce and pour

For poured walls, forms are set and rebar is tied in place before concrete is placed and finished. For block, units are laid, cored and grouted to the same standard.

  4. Install drainage and backfill

A perforated drain pipe and filter fabric go behind the wall, then soil is backfilled in lifts. Water is carried away, not trapped against the slab.

When walls fail

Fixing Retaining Wall Repair Before Collapse

A wall does not fail overnight. It leans, bulges, cracks or sheds soil first, and those signs mean water or a weak footing is winning the battle. Retaining wall repair identifies the root cause, usually poor drainage, a shallow footing or missing reinforcement.

Some walls can be stabilised and repaired if caught early. Others have moved too far and rebuilding is the safer, more honest choice. We assess the damage and tell you whether a poured concrete or block construction rebuild makes sense for your site. We also handle foundation issues that may be tied to wall movement.

Common questions

Retaining Wall Questions Answered

Engineering, drainage, poured versus block and repair for retaining walls in Regina.

The parts you do not see: a footing sized to the height and load, reinforcement tied through the wall, and a drainage layer and weeping tile behind it. A wall built without those leans and fails no matter how good the face looks.
Both work when engineered properly. A poured wall is a single monolithic structure; a block wall offers more finish options. We recommend one based on the height, the site and the look you want.
Almost always water pressure or a footing problem. Without drainage behind it, water builds up and pushes the wall over time. Retaining wall repair addresses that cause, not just the lean.
It depends how far it has moved. A wall caught early can often be stabilised and repaired; one that has shifted badly is safer rebuilt right. We give you a straight answer on the free assessment.
Taller walls and walls that retain a surcharge often do, and may need engineered drawings. We tell you what your wall needs upfront and can handle the permit as part of the project.

Poured a retaining wall to hold back the side yard. They put real drainage and weeping tile behind it. A full year of freeze-thaw and it has not moved a millimetre.

Our old block wall was bulging. They explained it was a drainage problem, rebuilt it properly with the footing it should have had. Solid now.

Block retaining wall that ties into the patio grading. Engineered, cored and reinforced, and the finish matches everything else in the yard.

They were honest that our leaning wall had moved too far to just patch. Rebuilt it right and walked us through why the first one failed.
