Permanent Color Into Stained Concrete Slabs

Acid and water-based stains penetrate or chemically react with concrete to create rich, variegated color that lives in the slab itself, not on top of it. Regina Concrete applies stain to new pours and existing floors in showrooms, restaurants, hotel lobbies, and feature spaces where depth and character matter. Every project includes a free written estimate and on-site stain test.

Stain vs. coating

Why Stained Concrete Outlasts Paint

Paint and epoxy sit on the surface; stain becomes part of the slab. Acid stains trigger a chemical reaction with the concrete's mineral content, forming permanent color compounds that cannot chip or peel. Water-based stains soak deep into the pores, creating color that wears as patina rather than failure. The variegation that comes from natural slab variation becomes a design feature, not a defect.

Stained concrete shines in high-visibility commercial spaces: showroom floors where vehicles sit on rich color, restaurant dining rooms where the floor is part of the brand story, hotel lobbies where the finish catches light and draws the eye. Pair stain with polished concrete to amplify depth and add a protective layer that lasts years between reseals.

For broader decorative options, explore our full decorative concrete range. When pattern or texture is the priority, stamped concrete delivers stone-look or geometric effects. For uniform color without variegation, epoxy flooring is the tool.

The stain sequence

How Stain Gets Applied to Your Slab

  1. On-site stain test

We apply the chosen stain to a small area of your actual slab to confirm color depth, reaction quality, and any surface prep needed. This test is your color preview at full scale before we commit to the entire floor.

  2. Grind and clean the surface

Diamond grinding or chemical cleaning removes old sealers, coatings, and contaminants so the stain can penetrate or react properly. Existing slabs need this step; new slabs get a light prep to open the pores.

  3. Apply stain in measured coats

Acid stain is applied in stages and allowed to react, then neutralized with baking soda solution to stop the chemical process. Water-based stain is sprayed or rolled in layers to build color depth. Both methods create the variegated character.

  4. Polish, seal, and handoff

The stained surface is polished to bring out color depth and protected with a commercial-grade sealer. We document the maintenance schedule (sealer refresh every few years) so your floor stays sharp long-term.

Durability by design

Stain Lives in the Concrete, Not on It

Because stain is absorbed or chemically bonded into the slab, it cannot peel, flake, or separate like a coating. The color is the concrete itself. Wear over decades shows as a natural patina that deepens the character rather than exposing bare spots or failure points. Maintenance is sealer reapplication every few years in commercial settings, not floor replacement.

Combine stain with polished concrete finishing for maximum depth and protection. Integrate stained zones with stamped concrete or epoxy floors in a coordinated decorative concrete design.

Common questions

Stained Concrete Questions, Answered

Acid vs water stain, slab prep, color predictability and pairing with polish.

Acid stain produces deep variegated color through chemical reaction; results are unique to each slab and less predictable. Water-based stain gives more predictable color and a wider palette. We recommend based on the look you want and how much variability you embrace.
Mostly. The stain test on your actual slab gives a strong read of how the color will land at full scale. Some natural variability is part of the appeal; if you want exact-uniform color, a coating is the better tool.
Both, with the right prep. Existing slabs need diamond grind or chemical cleaning to remove old sealers and contaminants so the stain reaches the concrete. Old slabs with extensive damage may not stain evenly; we test first.
Yes, for protection and to bring out the color depth. Sealer reapplication every several years in commercial settings keeps the floor looking sharp and the color saturated.
Typically several days from prep through stain, neutralize, polish and seal. Larger floors stretch to weeks. The schedule is in the quote so you can plan around the work.
