Pattern and Colour in Stamped Concrete Patios

Stamped concrete gives your backyard a stone-like finish without the cost of laying actual pavers. Regina Concrete pours a slab with integral colour, presses a slate, flagstone, or plank pattern into the wet surface, and seals it for weather protection. The result is a durable patio that mimics premium hardscape materials at a concrete price. Call for a free written estimate.

Decorative finish on solid base

How Stamped Patio Construction Works

The stamped finish is applied to a standard concrete slab. We excavate the patio area, compact a granular base, set forms to slope water away from the house, and pour air-entrained concrete with integral pigment mixed throughout. While the slab is still workable, a release agent is applied and the stamp pattern is pressed in by hand or machine.

The pattern creates the visual texture and depth. Control joints are cut to tuck into the pattern lines so they disappear visually. Once the slab cures, a sealer is applied to lock in the colour and protect the surface from moisture, UV, and freeze-thaw cycles.

This approach means the structural integrity comes from the concrete itself, not the finish. The decorative layer sits on top of a properly engineered slab. For comparison, see exposed aggregate patios or explore outdoor living projects that combine stamped concrete with other hardscape elements.

Installation sequence

Stamped Patio Installation in Regina

  1. Site prep and base work

The patio area is excavated to the correct depth, a compacted granular base is laid, and forms are set to establish the finished slope so water drains away from the house.

  2. Choose pattern and colour

We bring stamped samples to your site in daylight so you can see how the pattern and integral colour look against your home, existing concrete, and landscaping.

  3. Pour and stamp the slab

Air-entrained concrete with integral pigment is placed, the release agent is applied, and the stamp pattern is pressed into the surface while the concrete is still plastic.

  4. Finish, cure, and seal

Control joints are cut into the pattern, the slab cures for several days, and a protective sealer is applied to enhance colour and shield the patio from weather and salt.

Choosing the right patio

Stamped vs Other Patio Finishes

Stamped concrete is the most decorative patio option. If you want a lower-maintenance alternative with natural stone texture, exposed aggregate offers a washed finish that shows the stone in the mix. For a budget-friendly, durable option, plain concrete with a broom finish is the most practical choice.

If your existing patio is structurally sound but visually tired, patio resurfacing can refresh the surface without a full tear-out and pour. Stamped concrete also pairs well with stamped driveways and decorative walkways for a cohesive outdoor design.

Common questions

Stamped Concrete Patio Questions, Answered

Patterns, colour, sealing and how stamped patios hold up in Regina.

Stamped concrete carries a premium over a plain broom-finish patio because of the extra labour, integral colour and release agents. The trade-off is a patio that reads like flagstone or slate at concrete prices.
Every two to three years in Regina is typical. Resealing keeps the colour vivid and protects the pattern from weather and UV. Skip it and the patio dulls and the surface wears faster than it should.
Not if it is finished and sealed for the use. The texture from a proper stamp plus a sealer with slip additive keeps the patio grippy underfoot even with wet feet or pool splash.
Yes. We match the stamp pattern and colour to existing concrete, the driveway, the walkways, or design it as part of the wider outdoor living plan.
Yes, when poured properly. Air-entrained mix, compacted base, control joints in the pattern, and proper sealing all combine to handle freeze-thaw. Sealing is the maintenance that keeps water and salt out of the surface.

★★★★★

Stamped a slate-pattern patio behind the house. From the deck above you cannot tell it is not real slate, and the joints disappear into the pattern.

They brought pattern and colour samples in daylight, which made the choice obvious. The patio matches the existing stone on the house perfectly.

Big stamped flagstone patio off the kitchen. Looks designer, drains right, and a winter of freeze-thaw later there is not a crack out of the joint line.

Stamped plank pattern, gives a wood-deck look in concrete. No staining, no warping, just a quick wash and reseal every couple of years.
