When Custom Concrete Mixes Are Required

Not every project pours with standard concrete. Structural work calls for high-strength mixes that meet engineered load specs. Thin slabs and overlays benefit from fiber-reinforced concrete that controls cracks without traditional rebar. Operations needing fast turnaround rely on rapid-set formulations that reach service strength in hours. Regina Concrete batches custom mixes to your engineer's exact specifications, with full documentation for structural audit. Free written quote on every order.

When Standard Mix Isn't Enough

Standard ready mix works for most pours, but certain projects demand concrete formulated to precise engineering requirements. High-strength mixes exceed normal compressive strength for structural columns, precast beams, and load-bearing elements where the design load is non-negotiable. Fiber-reinforced concrete embeds steel or synthetic fibers throughout the slab matrix, providing crack control that can reduce or eliminate the need for traditional rebar in thin applications, overlays, and decorative work. Rapid-set mixes use accelerated chemistry to reach service strength in a fraction of standard cure time, critical for road repairs under traffic, runway work, or industrial floors where production downtime costs money.

Each specialty mix type solves a specific problem. The engineer specifies which one the project needs, and we batch to that specification with calibrated proportions and documented batch records. Substituting standard concrete for high-strength fails the structural design. Using standard when rapid-set is specified can cause cracking from hydration heat. The spec is the spec.

Our standard ready mix handles everyday pours efficiently. For variable volumes or remote sites, volumetric concrete offers on-site mixing. When your project requires concrete pumping alongside specialty mix, we coordinate both services.

The process

How Custom Mixes Get Batched and Delivered

  1. Review engineer specs

You provide the mix design from your engineer: target strength, slump, air content, admixtures, fiber type and dosage, set time, and any testing requirements. We confirm we can meet the spec and outline the documentation package.

  2. Batch at the plant

The concrete is mixed at our batching plant with calibrated scales and verified proportions. Batch records are created in real time, documenting every component and the time of mixing.

  3. Load and deliver

Trucks are loaded with the custom mix and routed to your pour site. Batch records, mix design, and any test cylinders travel with the load. Discharge happens as your crew directs.

  4. Compile documentation

After the pour, we compile the full documentation package: mix design, batch records, delivery times, slump verification, and test cylinder results if applicable. This supports your structural or compliance audit.

Precision matters

Why Specification Match Cannot Be Compromised

An engineer specifies a particular concrete mix because the project's structural integrity, durability, or performance depends on it. High-strength concrete is specified for load-bearing elements; using standard mix instead creates a structural failure waiting to happen. Rapid-set is specified when cure time is critical; standard concrete will not meet the schedule. Fiber-reinforced is specified for crack control in thin slabs; omitting the fibers defeats the design intent.

We supply the mix the engineer specifies, without substitution or cost-cutting shortcuts. If the spec calls for 5,000 psi high-strength concrete with test cylinders, that is what you get. If rapid-set is required, we batch rapid-set. The documentation package proves compliance, supporting your final engineering signoff. Pair specialty mixes with our concrete pumping services when the project requires both, and integrate with broader industrial concrete work where specialty pours fit into larger scopes.

Common questions

Custom Mix Questions, Answered

High-strength, fibers, rapid-set, custom mixes and documentation.

Concrete with compressive strength well above standard ranges, typically for structural columns, precast elements, or engineered applications. The engineer's spec defines the strength target; the mix design is built to hit it with appropriate testing.
Crack control through synthetic or steel fibers distributed in the matrix, sometimes replacing or supplementing traditional rebar for thin slabs, overlays, and decorative pours. The fiber type and dosage match the engineered spec.
When the pour has to return to service much faster than standard concrete allows, road repair under traffic, runway repair, industrial floors with short shutdown windows. Rapid-set chemistry is different; the mix design accounts for that.
Yes, when the project requires laboratory verification. Test cylinders are cast at the pour, cured per spec, and delivered to the specified testing lab for compressive strength verification at the schedule the engineer requires.
Mix design, batch records, delivery times, test cylinder logs where applicable. The package supports structural audit and compliance review; it is part of the project deliverable, not an extra.
