Medical Facility Flooring Built for Infection Control

Clinics, hospitals, dental practices, and diagnostic labs need concrete floors that eliminate seams where bacteria hide, integrate cove base so wall-floor junctions stay disinfected, and use antimicrobial chemistry proven to inhibit biological growth. Regina Concrete designs and installs healthcare-grade systems that pass infection-control review. Every project includes a free written estimate and firm schedule.

Infection-control driven

Why Medical Flooring Demands a Different Approach

A standard commercial floor with grout lines, seams, and a baseboard-to-wall gap creates thousands of microscopic spaces where bacteria survive cleaning. Medical facilities cannot accept this. The solution is a monolithic concrete floor system poured seamlessly across the entire zone, with the floor material continuing up the wall as an integrated cove base, and antimicrobial chemistry built into the topcoat.

The result is a single continuous surface with no seams in the cleaning path and no gap at the wall junction. A disinfection mop or auto-scrubber can roll across the entire floor and wall transition without encountering a crevice. Bacteria has nowhere to establish. This is the foundation of real infection control in a medical setting.

Our approach aligns with the broader retail and restaurant concrete work and the full commercial concrete service line. Distinct from restaurant kitchen floors in chemistry and from brewery and winery floors in drainage and slope requirements.

How it works

Installation Sequence for Medical Facility Floors

  1. Risk-level zoning with infection control

We meet with the infection-control officer and facilities team to map zones by risk (procedure rooms, exam areas, corridors, support spaces) and determine the system specification each zone requires based on its cleaning protocol.

  2. Slab prep and cove staging

The existing concrete slab is diamond-ground to the system's profile, cracks are filled and sealed, wall-floor junctions are cleaned and primed, and cove base material is positioned for integration during the pour.

  3. Seamless pour with integrated cove

The matched epoxy or urethane system with antimicrobial additive is applied seamlessly across the floor and continued as a cove base up the wall to the specified height, creating one monolithic surface with zero seams in the cleaning zone.

  4. Topcoat, cure, and protocol handoff

The antimicrobial topcoat is applied at the correct thickness, the floor cures per manufacturer specs, and the disinfection protocol (approved chemicals, equipment, frequency) is documented and transferred to the housekeeping team.

The critical detail

Cove Base Eliminates the Bacteria Trap

The wall-floor junction is the highest-bacteria zone in any medical facility. A traditional vinyl baseboard sitting against a floor creates a gap, however small, where organic matter accumulates and bacteria thrives. A cove base system has zero gap. The concrete floor curves up the wall in one continuous, seamless piece. A disinfection mop or auto-scrubber rolls across the wall transition without ever hitting a seam or crevice.

This single detail is what separates a medical-grade floor from a standard commercial floor. Many contractors skip the cove to save cost. We do not. Every healthcare floor we install includes the cove base as part of the system. It is specified, priced, and installed. Coordinate with retail and restaurant services in mixed-use medical buildings and the broader commercial concrete portfolio.

Common questions

Medical Flooring Questions, Answered

Seamless systems, cove base, antimicrobial chemistry and infection-control protocols.

Three things: seamless install across the cleaning path, integrated cove base up the wall, and antimicrobial chemistry. All three together support real infection control; missing any one creates the crevice or chemistry gap that bacteria exploits.
Yes. The wall-floor junction is the single highest-bacteria zone in any facility. A vinyl baseboard against a floor has a gap; cove base eliminates it. Infection-control standards require it for procedure and patient-care zones.
Several proven antimicrobial additives integrate into epoxy and urethane systems and inhibit bacterial growth on the surface. We spec the additive based on the facility's infection-control program and the manufacturer recommendation.
Yes, with planning. We zone the install around clinical operations, schedule for low-utilization periods (overnight, weekends, planned closures), and contain dust and odor to keep the rest of the facility operating. Coordination is built into the project plan.
Per zone, typically a few days for prep and install, plus cure before disinfection chemicals can be applied. Whole-facility projects stretch across weeks with careful zoning. The full schedule is in the quote.
